Just like Netflix and chill, you’ll already know that weed and movies makes for an awesome combination, not just as a pastime but also on both the silver screen and small screen. While some movies on this list are what you’d expect, such as Up in Smoke and Friday, there are a couple that you might not have seen, like Saving Grace. Now, all that’s left is to pick one from the list, which is in no particular order, and sit back, light up and enjoy yourself.

1. Up in Smoke (1978)

Man, what is in this shit, man?

Along with being Cheech and Chong’s first movie, it was also the first stoner buddy comedy, which essentially established the genre. If you are familiar with cannabis culture, or even just counterculture, you’ll already know why Up in Smoke is a classic.

2. Reefer Madness (1936)

Just a young boy… under the influence of drugs… who killed his entire family with an axe.

Sure, you don’t need to be elevated to watch this (or any of the movies in this list), but it will only help elevate the experience. The movie was originally released as Tell Your Children in 1936 – but it was also titled The Burning Question and even Love Madness – as a morality title (that was financed by a church group) for parents to teach their children about the “dangers” of the “killer weed.”

But it was then bought by a producer, who re-cut as an exploitation flick, which is where it got the title it is most known as: Reefer Madness.

3. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Check you later.

C’mon, did you think this list wouldn’t start with one of the most popular coming-of-age flicks, ever? After all, Dazed and Confused made Quentin Tarantino’s list of his “favorite films of all time” and two of Entertainment Weekly’s lists, which were the “50 Best High School Movies” and “Funniest Movies of the Past 25 Years”.

4. Friday (1995)

Weed is from the earth. God put this here for me and you. Take advantage, man, take advantage.

Set over a single day (Friday, of course) in one street in South Central, the movie tells the story of Ice Cube’s “Craig” and Chris Tucker’s “Smokey” trying to pay a drug dealer, before “Big Worm” kills them both.

As a cult movie, which led to two sequels being made, it also made another of Tarantino’s lists (this time, as one of his twenty favorite movies released between 1992 and 2009).

5. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.

When it comes to the quintessential “stoner,” you can’t go past Sean Penn’s iconic portrayal of Jeff Spicoli, one of the more memorable characters that were introduced in one of the first high school comedies.

With the focus on a core group of teens, the surfer and stoner that is Spicoli is used sparingly, but his subplot leads to some of the funniest moments in a movie that still stands the test of time, which is what makes it a classic.

6. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

Be excellent to each other. And… party on, dudes!

Really, the best way to describe Bill and Ted’s first adventure is that it’s a science-fiction comedy, which is also a stoner buddy film – all without the characters actually smoking, though.

The plot is simple: the two slackers, being Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted “Theodore” Logan, travel through time to get help from historical figures, such as Billy the Kid and Socrates, so they can pass their high school history presentation – all with the help of George Carlin (at his most excellent) as Rufus.

7. Half Baked (1998)

I don’t do drugs, though – just weed.

While it’s not universally loved, there is something about Half Baked, which continues to entertain – mostly to people who smoke, mind you. Written by Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan, the co-creators of Chappelle’s Show, it’s safe to say that Half Baked is definitely your above-average stoner comedy.

8. Saving Grace (2000)

I’m glad to see she’s keeping up the village tradition of total contempt for the law.

Only the British could produce a stoner comedy that is anything but stereotypical, which is what it did with Saving Grace. The story sees Grace turning to the cultivation of your favorite herb to help get out of debt, following the death of her husband. Having been co-written by Craig Ferguson, you know it’ll have you laughing, too.

9. The Big Lebowski (1998)

That rug really tied the room together.

Between toking and imbibing on his White Russians, “the Dude” is led astray from his mission to find the wife of the eponymously named “Big” Lebowski, which is where the fun and games begin. But, no matter what happens, the Dude abides.

10. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

Who smokes the blunts? We smoke the blunts.

The fourth movie in Kevin Smith’s “View Askewniverse,” the cult heroes that are Jay and Silent Bob were finally given their own movie in 2001, which saw the two set off to seek retribution for being used as inspiration for “Bluntman and Chronic” in a Hollywood film.

Given its title, the movie references the Star Wars universe, popular culture and also stoner culture, with gags that will have you rolling.

11. Pineapple Express (2008)

I’m chill. I’m chill as a cucumber, man.

While Harold and Kumar became cult heroes a few years before, it was James Franco and Seth Rogen that took the stoner comedy back to the mainstream (with help from Danny McBride, too, of course).

The comedy sees Rogen’s character fleeing from hitmen and a corrupt police officer, which all begins with him going to buy weed from his dealer, who is portrayed by Franco (in a role that saw him nominated for a Golden Globe).
