There’s nothing like buying your first bag of pot. Not only is it exciting, but it’s also one of the first steps to entering the wonderful world of weed. However, since you’ve never purchased your own buds before, it can also be a nerve-wracking experience. But not to worry, you don’t have to do this completely blindfolded. As long as you know the basics, your first time buying pot will go smoother than you may think. From understanding the slang for weight to the proper way to ask someone if they have any, here are six things to know before buying your first bag of weed.
1. Investing in a scale will help you avoid getting ripped off
If you’ve never bought pot before, then you wouldn’t know if you’re getting ripped off or not. But by purchasing a scale, you can measure the goods yourself to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. You can find them anywhere, from Amazon to Walmart, though they won’t flat out say “weed scale.”
2. The slang for weight
When you show up to buy your buds, you need to know how much you want. You can use the helpful photo above as a guide. However, prices will vary state by state, so you’ll need to do your research.
3. If you can, bring a friend along
To save you a lot of trouble, ask one of your weed-smoking pals to come with you to get your first bag of pot. If you’re going to a dispensary, then they certainly won’t mind. But if your getting your stuff from a random local dealer, then be respectful and make sure it’s okay first.
4. Be discreet when asking if someone has any
First of all, you shouldn’t be asking anyone and everyone for weed. Assuming you know who you’re going to, try not to make it so obvious. For example, don’t flat out ask “Can I get some pot?” That could get you and your dealer into some serious trouble down the road. Instead, use some code words.

5. Pay attention to quality
Buying a bag of shitty weed will ruin your experience altogether. Typically, bad weed is dry, dark in color, and breaks apart easily. Good pot, however, is beautiful, green, and sticky. Also, if it’s true dank, it will smell like dank. Pay attention to color, smell, and consistency. That’s how you’ll know for sure what it is that you’re buying.
6. Prepare to wait and be patient
Whether you’re going to your local dealer or a dispensary, expect there to be a wait. As far as your dealer goes, you have to go by their time. If they say they’ll be five minutes, but end up taking 20, don’t bug them. Otherwise, you might end up waiting for nothing.
You likely won’t wait as long at a dispensary unless they’re crowded. Still, you should always prepare to wait longer than you expect. And of course, be patient while you do so.
