Keeping your cannabis in a safe place is just as important as maintaining a bottle of fine wine. In addition to preserving its quality, properly storing your weed will help avoid unfriendly guests, such as mold and mildew.

You spend your hard earned money on the buds you smoke. Therefore, keeping them fresh is important.

The first thing to bear in mind is the temperature. Because mildew and mold thrive in warmer temperatures, typically between 77°F and 86°F, you must store your cannabis in a cold and dark spot.

Speaking of mildew and mold, controlling the humidity will also help keep these bad guys away from your buds. Generally, the herb should be kept between 59% and 63% RH to maintain consistency, color, flavor, and aroma.

By putting your weed away in a cooler area, you’ll prevent any drying of the cannabinoids and terpenes. Not to mention, the smoke will be less harsh.

Next, you must avoid placing your cannabis in direct sunlight. As a result of harmful UV rays hitting your buds, they will begin to degrade over time.

In fact, storing your ganja away from direct sunlight allows you to be in full control of the temperature, which leads to yet another factor to consider – air control.

Of course, during the growing stages, cannabis requires oxygen. However, only the right amount of air is necessary to keep your buds fresh and in their natural form.

While too little air affects relative humidity, too much air can speed up the degradation process.

In addition to the above do’s, here is a list of other ways to properly store your ganja,

  1. Store in containers with a neutral charge, such as glass jars.
  2. Use hydrometers or other products that both control and monitor RH levels.
  3. Minimize oxygen exposure by using vacuum sealed jars and containers.
  4. Keep your strains separated to maintain their flavor.
  5. Explore different ways to store your cannabis. The possibilities are never-ending.

So, your buddy tells you that storing your buds in the fridge will make them last longer. Although that may sound like a good idea, don’t do it. Doing so will only increase the risk of mold and mildew due to fluctuating temperatures.

But what about the freezer? Again, don’t. As a result of storing your ganja in freezing temperatures, the trichomes will eventually become weak and break as if they were precious icicles.

And if you think a plastic baggie will solve your problems, then you’re wrong again. Often, plastic bags have a static charge that attracts trichomes. However, if you must use one, only do so temporarily.

In like manner of the above don’t you should also avoid the following,

  1. Storing your cannabis near electronics or other devices that put off heat.
  2. Using a tobacco humidor. Doing so will affect the flavor of your herb. Also, it may oversaturate it.
  3. Keeping your grinder, pipes, or other weed-friendly items with your buds. Because these items often contain resin, they will only stink up your storage container.

Again, cannabis is like a bottle of fine wine. If you want to make it last, then there are a few rules to follow. Not to mention, accurately preserving your pot will save you money in the long run, among other things.
